As a researcher who spends a great deal of time on the Civil War veteran I’ve compiled a list of helpful websites for my personal use. Perhaps this is one you haven’t come across yet. The Civil War Soldier Search – A Guide to Research Resources. This site is dedicated solely to the Civil War veteran and his military service. Maintained by an independent researcher who spent a number of years searching the records in the National Archives and Library of Congress this site provides numerous links and information for your continued search.
As the site owner states in the title this is “A Guide to Research Resources” and believe me there are a number of resources to follow-up with. In particular I’m impressed with the Confederate Military Records. Since the number of Confederate files in the National Archives is limited, often a How-To article will encourage the descendant of a Confederate veteran to “check state archives” and leave it at that. This site provides numerous links for the Confederate veteran researcher to follow. Many more than I have seen elsewhere.
Of course links for Union veteran research are well documented, as well as a variety of other topics, such as published sources, newspapers and manuscripts. I particularly like the list of Civil War photographs. There was a selection there I didn’t know of previously.
I did find several broken links on this site which is a big draw-back but I was able to “Google” the title of the broken link and found the new site. Ordinarily I would not recommend a site with broken links but the variety of resources here, some I have never heard of before, helped me to decide to share this site anyway. I did contact the owner of the site regarding the broken links and hope he’ll update them. This site shouldn’t be discounted.
As I mentioned earlier this site is a guide, an index to many other sources of information. Some you may find online, others will require a researcher’s field trip to other repositories but I’m sure it will provide the Civil War researcher with many new leads.
Good luck as you continue to research your Civil War ancestor!
