Tracing Blue and Gray
. . . . . bringing life to Civil War research
Tracing Blue and Gray will be our newest monthly column here at The In-Depth Genealogist. Written by Cindy Freed, you’ll see the first installment beginning with our May issue.
Each month Tracing Blue and Gray will outline the best methods of Civil War genealogy research and also look into the real aspects of what our ancestors endured. All soldiers, both North and South, have a story to tell. It’s up to us, their proud descendants, to make sure it’s not forgotten. We’ll look at a soldier’s daily life and what he endured, like the miles and miles of bone weary marching, meager rations and the battle against previously unknown illnesses. We’ll look at how our ancestors suffered the shock of war’s cruelty and kept on going, to eventually get home to those they loved. We’ll feel, see, and experience what our Civil War ancestor went through making their military experience a very real part of our genealogy research.
Let’s meet here each month and take a closer look at the Civil War but this time while standing in our ancestors footprints.
If you have any questions or feedback on a column please feel free to post it in the comments section or on our forum. I look forward to sharing information and learning more about your Civil War ancestor.

I am really looking forward to Cindy’s column. A few years ago, I transcribed parts of some letters by my Confederate ancestors who were in some of the first battles, including, I think, Manassas and Bull Run. I’ll make myself a note to look up these transcriptions and add some of them in comments.
Thank you Mariann for your kind words.
You have letters from your Confederate soldier ancestors who fought at Manassas and Bull Run! Wow! What a treasure!
I would absolutely love to read the transcriptions. I’m really interested in what they experienced. I look forward to that! Thanks!!
